The Total Eclipse of April 8, 2024

Another total solar eclipse is coming to North America! This time, totality will also pass over Mexico and Canada – giving people all over North America another chance to experience this great celestial event.

In order to see totality, you have to be in the path of totality. If you aren’t in that path, you’ll only see a partial eclipse. You can learn more about those details with our simple eclipse viewing instructions guide.

The Total Eclipse of April 8, 2024 in Buffalo

Buffalo is right on the centerline, and will be an excellent place to see totality!

The big event happens just after 3:18pm EDT, and people in the downtown area will see about 3m 45s of totality.

Where can I see the total eclipse?

Many people will want to see the eclipse from Niagara Falls, simply because of the experience totality will bring to this amazing natural wonder. From the Nikola Tesla monument on Goat Island, you’ll get almost 3m 30s in the shadow. You won’t go wrong from any location on the Falls campus, from either the US or the Canadian side.

If you want to brave the lakes in early April, then you’ll be happy to know that essentially ALL of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario lie within the path!

If you’re east of town, then you’ll be very close to the centerline if you stick to places like Attica, Batavia, Medina, Brockport, or Rochester. The entire area is going to have a great experience on eclipse day!

What will I see on eclipse day?

Because Buffalo is so well situated, if you leave town you’re only going to get less time in the shadow. If you have to escape clouds, then I-90 down toward Erie will be basically paralleling the path, and you won’t go wrong no matter where you stop – even if you have to go all the way to Cleveland.

Remember that even if you are in the path of totality, if the Sun is not COMPLETELY eclipsed you MUST always use ISO-certified eye protection to watch the eclipse. You MUST use your eclipse glasses to observe all the partial phases.

Use ISO-certified eye protection during the partial phases

ISO Certification Always remember the rule for using eye protection during an eclipse: If there’s ANY bright part of the Sun showing, then you have to use your eclipse glasses to watch the event.

That means if you can see anything at all of the Sun through the glasses, then the Sun is too bright and you have to leave the glasses on! If you can see absolutely NO piece of the Sun through the eclipse glasses, then it’s safe to take them off. But the second any bright part of the Sun becomes visible again, you have to put them back on – and this can be mere seconds after you took them off.
